Sunday dinner with Alchy gang

It’s been a long while since I last saw the Alchy gang. Over dinner and coffee today, I looked at us the way we are now and I really feel we’ve come a damn long way. In the past, the keywords for weekends meant Zouk, Mono, Martell, Vodka, Zouk invites, guest list, etc. Of late, getting together having a meal together and just being in each other’s company.
Today, we celebrated Cousin Pat’s birthday over dinner at Chin Chin. It is also the first time our latest addition, Reyes is out with us. Reyes is such a bundle of joy and everytime I see the Sin family, I feel so happy for them.

And for the first time at Chin Chin, I experienced really great service. The aunty even came over and asked if the food is ok leh. All because Miss Jenny-I-am-Hainanese-and-I-can-speak-the-language-Foo ordered the food in Hainanese. Puts me and Roy to shame since we are also from the same clan and cannot understand a word of it.
Now, the food at Chin Chin is undoubtedly good and I don’t have to really wax lyrical about it. If you plan to go there for a meal with the family, just order exactly what you see here (the Hainanese knows what best to order at a Hainanese joint), and you will walk out of the eating place beaming with content. Better still if you can speak Hainanese!

Chin Chin is one of the best Hainanese joints with a rich history in town. A really good place to tuck into a great meal with family and/or friends. The prices are wallet-friendly – something that is favoured by all in this current economic situation

Possibly the best wanton mee in SG

Sitting quietly in the corner of Tanglin Halt Market is the Guangdong Wanton Mee. Without a single accolode, this stall can be easily passable.
I was hooked on this stall since the day Zann introduced it to me. Apparently this stall has been operating since Zann was a kid! Don’t expect any sort of smiles from the stall owners and instead be greeted with hostility. (However when we went tonight, there’s an extremely friendly uncle who is all smiles).

The beauty of this dish lies in the sauce & chilli for the mee, and the wanton. The chilli never fails to break me into a sweat, and I really love the savory taste of it. Noodles are springy and nice. However, if you cannot stand the “kee” taste in mee like me, opt for the kway teow version.

The Wanton is simply out of this world. It lacks in the size department but is big on its taste. The pork used is savory, peppery and it sort of melts in your mouth. We’ve seen them make the wanton one night while having supper, the mountain of pork filling they use seems like any other normal pork filling we’ve seen. But what makes their wanton better than the rest? We’ve since given up trying to demistify and to focus on savouring the wonder taste instead.

One thing that I don’t fancy though, its the char siew. Char siew in my context, is supposed to be nicely charred and fatty. The lean char siew they use doesn’t really compliment with the rest of the dish. If they’ll use the fatty char siew, it’ll be PERFECT.

Parking is a breeze as there’s a public carpark right in front.
